“live albums in and with new drummer Leah Shapiro in tow, black-clad California trio Black Rebel Motorcycle Club return to the pulpit for Beat The Devil’s Tattoo, their forthcoming long-player for Vagrant. If “Conscience Killer” is any indication–and we do hope it is–the trio are falling back on the floorboard-rattling fuzz assault of their first two records, albeit with shades of the gospel-focused brilliance they found on 2005’s Howl. Basically, it’s classic B.R.M.C.–a retro-futurist blues canonball that will leave you completely blitzed and thoroughly converted.
“If “Beat the Devil’s Tattoo,” the fifth studio album from California psych-rockers Black Rebel Motorcycle Club, sounds like the work of a hungry young band that’s just starting out, that’s because in a way, it is. Despite over a decade of success, BRMC’s co-frontmen—guitarist Peter Hayes and bassist Robert Levon Been—finished their most recent world tour flat broke, having self-financed their last several months on the road after parting ways with their label, RCA Records.”
